  • open leermaterialen, zoals korte video’s, handleidingen of interactieve tools.

Over ons

AI for Parents

AI for Parents is a science communication project by the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS) at Maastricht University (UM). The project brings parents, students, and teachers from SVO|PL and researchers from UM together to explore how generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be understood and used responsibly in education. The focus is on the Parkstad region.

Why this project?

AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude have entered classrooms and households. Many parents want to support their children, but feel unsure about:

  • what AI actually is,
  • how it is used in school,
  • what the risks and opportunities are,
  • and how to use AI responsibly at home and in school.

Rather than telling parents what to think or do, this project starts from a simple idea:
the best solutions are created together**.**

Our approach: Co-Creation!

AI for Parents is built around co-creation. Parents, teachers, students, and university researchers collaborate in small working groups to:

  • identify real questions and concerns about AI in education,
  • explore these questions using a scientific mindset,
  • and jointly develop practical, accessible learning materials.

Participants do not need any technical background. Curiosity and willingness to think together are enough.

What do we do?

Over the course of the project, we organize co-creation working groups around themes such as mathematics, natural sciences, and technology and IT. The goal is to develop deliverables together that are really used by the stakeholders, for example,

  • Workshops and hands-on sessions for parents and children
  • Public events in schools and libraries
  • Open educational resources, such as short videos, guides, or interactive tools

But the exact output is not fixed in advance as they emerge from the needs and ideas of the participants directly!

Who is it for?

  • Parents of secondary school students
  • Teachers and school staff
  • Students interested in AI and education
  • Anyone curious about how AI affects learning and society

The project has a strong regional focus in Parkstad (and in particular in Heerlen), but its insights and materials will be shared more broadly.

Why is this important?

By actively involving parents in a scientific and creative process, the project aims to:

  • strengthen AI literacy and scientific literacy,
  • build trust and understanding around new technologies,
  • support equal opportunities in education,
  • and strengthen the connection between science and society.

About the project

AI for Parents is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) as part of the National Science Agenda – Science Communication programme. The project runs from 2025 to 2027 and is coordinated by Martijn Boussé and Linda Rieswijk (DACS, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Maastricht University) and Linda Verlinden (SVOPL) in collaboration with schools, libraries, and outreach partners.
