eduDACS is a team of researchers and lecturers with a heart for education with different backgrounds from the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS), Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), Maastricht University (UM), exploring how artificial intelligence, data science, and computer science can enhance education. We innovate assessment, teaching methods, and student engagement strategies. This site shares our projects and collaborations, bridging research and practice to improve education at UM and beyond.
Excellent news for our Department of Advanced Computing Sciences because we have three winners for the EDLAB – Maastricht University Centre for Teaching & Learning Education Innovation grants!

We have created two new demo movies of the Automated Conversational Assessment (ACAbot) prototype. The movies show the use of the system from student's and teacher's perspective, respectively.

A multimodal AI tutor system for statistics learning was demonstrated in the MSc Thesis project of Tommy Tran earlier this year.

Third-year Circular Engineering students presented innovative projects on ludodidactics and sustainability in calculus at SEFI 2025, showcasing student-driven education.

Martijn Boussé (FSE) and Alexandra Mihai (SBE) hosted a full-day workshop on Problem-Based Learning at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, engaging 26 teachers from diverse faculties in interactive sessions and discussions on applying PBL across disciplines.

We have received a new grant from the Nationale Wetenschapsagenda (NWA) to explore how parents, teachers, and scientists can co-create accessible educational tools on generative AI.

A Master Research Project group built a prototype of a system that reaches out to course participants after a teaching session to collect feedback for the teacher. We believe this type of system can be significantly more effective than traditional course feedback collected at the end of the course. The group also wrote a report about the system and its testing which will be published later this year. Stay tuned for updates! \ MRP Group 4, Spring 2025: Miguel Teixeira, Julie Bauer, Mikolaj Borowiecki, Chen Leyu, Zainab Kadour, and Noah Endres \ Contact: Aki Härmä and Martijn Bousse, DACS, Maastricht University, edudacs.nl

The CSE group at DACS enhances education with AI, data science, and computer science, driving innovation in assessment, student engagement, and educational tools.

Co-created with students, this project integrates sustainability into calculus, linking math to real-world challenges and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Excellent news for our Department of Advanced Computing Sciences because we have four winners for the EDLAB – Maastricht University Centre for Teaching & Learning Education Innovation grants! Even better: DACS staff is involved in five of the eleven awarded grants!!

We have received a new grant from NRO to validate and develop further our Automated Conversational Assessment (ACA) system, the pedagogical framework, and the validation.
