eduDACS

We are a team of researchers and lecturers with a heart for education with different backgrounds from the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS), Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), Maastricht University (UM), exploring how artificial intelligence, data science, and computer science can enhance education. We use technology, ranging from data science and AI to board games, to enhance education in fields like data science, artificial intelligence, computer science, and applied mathematics. Whether it's through innovating assessment methods, boosting student engagement, or developing educational tools, we aim to make learning more impactful and scalable

We focus on:

  • Educational innovation by and for DS/AI/CS education.
  • Creating, validating, and sharing new best practices.
  • Tackling real-world challenges in teaching and learning, such as scalable assessment, blended learning, and AI-powered feedback.
  • Supporting and mentoring teachers and fostering a strong community around educational research.

Some of our projects include:

  • Automated Conversational Assessment, using AI to create interactive, scalable assessment tools.
  • The Calculus Legacy board game, a narrative-driven game to teach calculus in a fun, engaging way (via a Comenius Teaching Fellow), and part of our game-based learning efforts.
  • AIvonturen, an outreach project bringing AI and data science to secondary school students.

We collaborate with EDLAB, PRIME (TU Delft), Fermat (UT), NRO, ComeniusNetwork, etc.

The team is coordinated by dr. ir. Martijn Boussé (m.bousse@maastrichtuniversity.nl) and our members are Aki Härmä, Bastian Küppers, Linda Rieswijk, Rico Möckel, Katharina Schneider, Max Sondag, Xiaoling Zhang, Stefan Maubach, Gijs Schoenmakers, Marieke Musegaas, Enrique Hortal Quesada, Ashish Sai, Otti D'Huys, and others.

We welcome lecturers and researchers of all backgrounds and levels who are passionate about improving education in computing sciences.
